Helping Returning Sudanese Refugees in Southern Sudan
After the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in January, 2005, the staggering five million displaced
persons and refugees who fled during the war began returning to their homes in Southern Sudan from North Sudan and
surrounding countries with high hopes of rebuilding their lives in a peaceful environment. The conflict had taken
its toll because entire villages had been decimated. The joy of returning home has been overshadowed by doubts
about the lack of infrastructure: there are no schools, hospitals or water systems. In the meantime, the fledgling
autonomy Government of Southern Sudan is struggling to gain a footing to rebuild the nation from scratch. These
regions will now have to be rebuilt from the ground up.
Padang Lutheran Christian Relief is committed to assisting in this process with the focus on returning Sudanese
refugees in Southern Sudan to rebuild their lives and community. PLCR is working to build schools, hospitals,
orphanages, churches and water supply systems, as well as to drill wells and provide food security and agriculture
development projects in Baliet County in Upper Nile State and Tonj South County in Warrap State in Southern
Sudan.
Future Planning Projects:
PLCR is planning to purchase office space in Malakal that will be operated as a field administrative centre in
order to eliminate the rent expenses. In the long run, this move will save much money towards our mission in
Southern Sudan. However, PLCR is planning to construct a guest house in Malakal city as funds become available, as
well as a youth-run community computer centre in Malakal city. This initiative will provide employment and
communications training. Also, PLCR is committed to building churches and housing for the local Sudanese Pastors in
Southern Sudan.
Thank you for supporting PLCR through your prayers and contributions!
