Food Security & Livelihoods
PROJECT TITLE: Food Security and Livelihoods
PROJECT LOCATION: Warrap and Upper Nile States, Southern Sudan
PROJECT DURATION: 12 months
PROJECT BUDGET: US$350,000
For more than two years, crops in Southern Sudan have been severely affected by insufficient rain. This year the
shortage of food from the harvests is taking its toll on the Sudanese people as well as the animals many depend
on.
According to the Government of Southern Sudan, 6.2 million people need food assistance in 2010 and 2011. In
response, PLCR has planned to provide food assistance for twelve months from February 2010 to March 2011.
In many areas of the country, the short rainy season from May to October was poor, causing an insufficient crop
harvest. The food prices have become expensive since last year causing pressure on households.
There have been increased rates reported in the admission of malnourished children to therapeutic feeding
programs in the first half of this year as families struggle to make ends meet.
Also, the heavy rains which are expected from June to September were late this year. Seeds that were planted
when the rains were expected died in the ground. In many cases, there were no new seeds to restore the seeds that
were died. It is anticipated that the harvest will be consequentially reduced, so there will be the increase in the
number of people facing severe problems.
The goal is to distribute the food rations monthly to approximately 7,000 people (5000 adults and 2,000
children) in both Upper Nile and Warrap States.
Supplementary food will be distributed to malnourished children through the feeding centers in Tonj South and
Baliet Counties in both Warrap and Upper Nile States.
Your financial support will help to provide food to the people of Sudan.
