Sobat Lutheran Academy
URGENT! Help the School in Southern Sudan

As planned, Padang Lutheran Christian Relief has built the Sobat Lutheran Academy in Nyongrial village
in Southern Sudan. It is the first permanent school building in the entire area since the end of the civil
war. Previously, the students were taught under the shade of fig trees in the dry season. When it rained, the
students would often go home.
Now that the Sobat Lutheran Academy is open, PLCR needs your help to keep it running and to
purchase the needed school supplies. To ensure that your gift will go to supporting the school, please download this PDF file.

PROJECT TITLE: Sobat Lutheran Academy
PROJECT LOCATION: Nyongrial at Baliet County, Sudan
PROJECT DURATION: 2010-2014
Project Background:

After the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in January 2005, the staggering five million displaced
persons and refugees began returning to their homes from North Sudan and surrounding countries. The conflict had
taken its toll. Entire villages had been decimated and the local infrastructure completely wiped out. These regions
will now have to be rebuilt from the ground up. According to the Government of Southern Sudan, 92 percent of the
population does not know how to read or write so education is of primary concern. To facilitate this, Padang
Lutheran Christian Relief has considered building an elementary school to cater for the students in the Nyongrial
area. Currently, classes are conducted under a fig tree (weather permitting) with students often sharing one text
book between them. The local government has donated a piece of land on which to build a school and plans are
already drawn for this eight classrooms structure which will also serve as the community centre for adult evening
classes.
The construction of the initial phase of this school is set to begin in February 2010 and will be officially
opened in March 2011 with the registration of 200 children. The capacity for the school is 325 students which will
provide space for additional returning children. Once the school is built, PLCR will recruit qualified teachers to
teach in the school. Moreover, PLCR will run this school for five years. Then, the school will be handed over to
the Ministry of Education in Upper Nile State in Southern Sudan.
ORIGINAL PROJECT SCOPE:
The Sobat Lutheran Academy will be the first permanent school facility in an area occupied by at least 50,000
citizens in Nyongrial Payam of Baliet County. The students will pay tuition fees which will ultimately sustain the
school, while there will be some financial support to assist underprivileged students who cannot afford to pay
tuition fees. Your financial gifts will cover the construction of the facility, furnishings for the classrooms and
initial operating costs.
Project Cost:
In this context, PLCR is seeking sponsors and donors to fund this school project. The proposed Elementary School
project can be realized for the following costs:
School construction cost: $150,000
School furnishings: $50,000
Annual Operating cost: $60,000
Total required financial assistance for this Project: $260,000
Funding assistance for this project is tax deductible. Your financial gift is an investment in the
future of this nation. Thank you for your partnership with us.
